Motherhood
and Pregnancy should be a
wonderful, enriching experience,
and it's natural to have concerns about the ways Baby will affect your
body,
moods and diet. Many first time Mums don't really know where
to start. Twenty years ago most expectant Mums got their
information on pregnancy,
birthing and parenting from family and friends, but the
decline of extended
families and the support they provided can make this a
difficult time these days. Today there is so much information
available
that it almost overwhelms, and in fact, can be counter-productive to
what should be a wonderful, fulfilling and happy time.
The
best advice is learn, read and listen, have an open mind and
investigate everything you can about your pregnancy and parenting your
new baby and what to expect
when you take Baby
home, but
temper it all with your own common sense and your own gut feelings.
Involve your partner as much as possible.
Get lots of exercise
(Yoga, Swimming, walking) because keeping active as long as possible
has proven to help enormously with weight, diabetes and other health
problems during pregnancy, but also makes
for an easier birth. Check your diet and make
sure you get as much sleep as you can. Don't stress the small
things .... remember your hormones are all out of kilter.
Invest
in some relaxation and
visualisation CD's, spoil yourself every now and again and
gather as much information as you can. Being well prepared
allows you to make valid choices about your pregnancy, what type of birth experience
you want and, most importantly, it helps you feel in control.
